Originally built in 1896, this Romanesque Revival style home is located on one of the most prestigious private streets in St. Louis. • Replacement of turret slate roof with North Country black slate
  • Replacement of copper ledge and built-in gutter
  • replacement of custom fabricated copper flashings and guttering
  • Historic carpentry repair
  • Replacement of copper gutters and downspouts

THE CHALLENGE

Renaissance was contacted to provide solutions for a very complex situation and a one of a kind roofing system. The insurance carrier, building consultants, lawyers and engineers had all given their assessments and were at an impasse.

Renaissance provided a common sense solution that worked for everyone, including Cultural Resources and the Preservation Board in St. Louis.

THE RENAISSANCE SOLUTION

Renaissance pulled from many facets of our expertise during this restoration.

Fabricating custom 20 oz. copper flashings and guttering in our inhouse Copper Studio along with our expertise in historic carpentry and our skilled installers made the project progress smoothly.

Procuring materials, including Ludowici clay tiles and North Country black slate were part of the challenge.

The Renaissance tile and slate experts worked closely with Ludowici to recreate a one of a kind clay tile system that had not been produced in over 100 years. Utilizing North Country slate for the half-round turret roof  makes for a beautiful compliment to the exterior.

THE RESULTS

This new roof system and extensive carpentry work that was done will last many years and the results are a one of a kind clay tile roof that is a sight to behold and a welcome restoration in this historic area of St. Louis.

Renaissance was awarded the 2024 Ludowici Project of the year award for this project.
